Great, another blog.

Who the heck cares? And about insulation? That’s even more boring than insurance!

Or is it?

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you lie awake at night on hot summer days because you’re sweating in bed?

2. Do your kids (or you) camp in the basement because it’s cooler in the summer?

3. Do you dread going upstairs because it’s freaking hot up there?

4. Do you get huge icicles on your house in the winter?

5. Are your AC bills out of control?

6. Are your heat bills even worse?

7. Is your addition heated in the summer and air conditioned in the winter?

Then you care about insulation, you just don’t know it yet.

Welcome to the Energy Smart Blog, where we fix these problems.

Here you’ll learn about Building Science, which holds the magical solutions (OK, not really magical) to the above problems, plus making your house a healthy, comfortable place to live.

Well crap, that sounds boring.

No, it’s not. Joe Lstiburek, our patron saint of Building Science, swears a lot. I like that. He makes boring things interesting.

This is my attempt to do the same, but instead of aiming at crazy building science geeks like me, this blog is made for REAL PEOPLE.

I like to say I’m like Ray from Ghostbusters (thankfully most people reading this will actually remember that movie) here’s why:

1. I understand the science, but I speak real English. Egon didn’t. (Total Protonic Reversal – all life exploding at the speed of light? Yeah, insulation can’t cause that.) 

2. I know that in the real world, you expect results. 

So from here on out I subject you to my musings. What will all this look like? I don’t really know yet. Here are a few of my initial ideas:

1. Weird stuff in attics. No one has been there in years before us. We find strange stuff sometimes.

2. Jargon Demystified. Thermal envelope? Radiant barrier? Building air standard? BPI? Cellulose? It’s not hard.

3. Building Science. This is how buildings work. My understanding is far from perfect – the more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know. Odds are good I know more than you, though. I’ll share some of this hard won knowledge.

4. Energy Efficiency in General. Yes, I insulate houses. Yes, that’s how I make money. But I’m a geek too. Programmable thermostats? Yeah, you should have one. Conserving water (hot water in particular)? There’s lots of ways. I’ll delve into that stuff.

5. News. It happens every day. If it’s related to insulation, energy efficiency, and so forth, it could end up here.

6. Stuff I See. People are weird. Weird people build houses. Therefore weird things get built and done in houses. Or sometimes it’s just how it used to be done. Either way, I’ll take pictures and share what the problem and the solution are.

7. Whatever I Feel Like. It’s my blog! I have free will! I have a sense of humor! That’s a powerful combination.
